When it comes to purchasing your next or first gaming headset there are many things that you need to look for to ensure you have the most awesome gaming experience ever.
I know when I bought my very first gaming headset I did a ton of research beforehand and visited multiple sites before I had enough info needed to make a sound decision as to which features needed to be included and which ones I could live without.
In the following blog post, I’ll be walking you guys through this process and sharing 5 things that you need to keep in mind before spending any of your hard earned money on a headset that may or may not live up to your expectations.
I’ll also be showing you some of the key features that I feel are necessary for the most optimal and immersive gaming experience of your life as well as a few features that aren’t really necessary but add to your overall experience.
Are you guys ready to rock?
1) Sound Quality
When choosing the perfect gaming headset that will meet your needs and give you the most immersive gaming experience, sound plays a massive role in this.
I firmly believe that sound plays just as big of a role as graphics and gameplay and without this, you won’t know when someone is sneaking up behind you and you won’t be able to gain leverage on your enemy and close in on the kill.
Should you go for stereo or surround sound?
This all depends on the type of games you’re into?
Are you more of an FPS type of gamer who plays games like Call Of Duty Or Destiny?
If so, then you will want to go with a surround sound headset that has positional audio where knowing the exact location of the enemy is crucial if you want to be on the winning team.
With multiple drivers in each earpiece, you’ll be able to determine the precise location of the enemy and even hear their footsteps to give you the most immersive gaming experience of your life.
However, if FPS games aren’t exactly your cup of tea and you’re more into story driven games like Assassins Creed or God Of War, then there isn’t a direct need for you to purchase a headset with surround sound.
A headset that only has stereo sound is what I would recommend that you go with as I feel this would work out the best for you.
Virtual Surround Sound Or DTS 7.1 Surround Sound? Which One Is Better?
Depending on the type of gaming experience you’re wanting to achieve will determine which one of these built in surround sound systems would be the best fit for you.
Whats the difference between Virtual surround & DTS 7.1 Surround sound?
True surround sound (DTS 7.1) has multiple speakers broadcasting from many different angles while virtual surround only uses 2 speakers and uses a complex sound processing system to imitate the same effect as true surround using artificial means.
Virtual surround sound is much lower quality sound but can be tweaked to perfection by dabbing in the headsets sound settings.
I think it’s quite obvious that true DTS 7.1 surround sound is a whole lot better here if you’re looking to purchase the best sounding headset that money can buy.
However, if you aren’t a perfectionist and you’re fine with artificial audio, then virtual surround is all you need.
2)Weight & Overall Comfort
In order for you to have the best possible gaming experience it’s crucial that you go with a headset that is going to feel comfortable being on your head for several hours and won’t make your ears hurt while you’re wearing it.
Trust me there is nothing worse than feeling weighted down while you’re on your gaming adventure or having to take your headset off multiple times to wipe the sweat off.
Not only does this disrupt your game and could get you killed, it also provides a not so great gaming experience and could ruin your experience if you choose the wrong headset.
What to look out for when buying a headset that will provide you with the most comfort
Before I look into buying a gaming headset, I pay close attention to the material that the earpieces is made of as well as how the headband is made.
Having a headset that doesn’t feel comfortable on your head and make you itch while playing can ruin your gaming experience and put you in a pretty piss poor mood which is something you want to avoid at all costs.
I recommend a headset that uses mesh material for the earpieces and is wrapped in synthetic leather for the most comfortable experience possible.
Also, if you wear glasses this will provide you with added comfort and support and relieve any unnecessary pressure off your head.
3) How Important Is The Mic?
Once again, this all depends on the type of game that you’re playing as the mic is how you’re be staying in contact with your team.
If you aren’t playing a first-person shooter type of game or any multiplayer game for that matter, then the mic wouldn’t play as important of a role in your headset purchase as it would if you were buying it to play Call Of Duty exclusively.
Does that make sense to you guys?
There are 2 different types of mics and these are omnidirectional and unidirectional and I’ll be showing you guys what each one of these terms means below so continue reading.
Omnidirectional– This type of mic picks up sounds from your surroundings and provides you with a more ambient experience.
This type of mic is more idea for story driven games where there isn’t a direct need for your voice.
Unidirectional- This is the type of mic geared more towards FPS (First Person Shooter) games as this type of mic focuses more on your voice and allows you to command your team and lead them into battle against the opposing team and claim victory.
If you’re more of an FPS gamer then you definitely want to go with a unidirectional mic to avoid any ambient noise on the battlefield which could greatly affect your performance on the battlefield and possibly cause you to end up on the losing team.
4) How Long Should The Battery Life Be?
Depending on whether you’re a casual gamer or a hardcore gamer, the battery life is one of the most important features that you need to consider before investing your hard earned money into a gaming headset.
How long of a battery life should a gaming headset have?
I personally go 15 hours and above myself, as I could spend an entire afternoon playing and not realize it so I definitely don’t want my batteries to die after a couple hours in, right?
If you’re the casual gamer who doesn’t play that often then the 10-hour battery life will do you just fine.
Also, it’s uber important for you to ensure the headset charges fairly fast (2 to 3 hrs max) as this could be a problem for you especially if you’re more of the hardcore type of gamer and you play every day.
I also recommend that you go with a headset that you can charge via USB as this is the fastest way to charge your headset in the least amount of time so you can get back in the game.
5) Durability & Value For Your Money
If you’re looking to invest a great amount of your hard earned money then you don’t want to be buying a piece of junk, but rather a piece of gaming equipment that will last you for years to come if you take care of it and don’t throw it across the room when you don’t win a match.
You want a headset that’s going to last you and be durable to withstand normal wear and tear and other situations as well.
That’s why it’s imperative that you read reviews and do lots of research on people who are verified buyers and can vouch for the quality and durability of the headset you are thinking of purchasing.
Also, you need to find out how many added features are included in the model you’re thinking about purchasing to see if you are getting the most bang for your buck.
My Closing Thoughts & Overall Recommendation
These are 5 of the things that I feel are the most important factors that you need to consider before even thinking of making your next headset purchase.
If you use these things that I’ve listed above as a guide to buying your next headset or your first headset whichever case applies to you, then you’ll be all set to have one of the most immersive gaming experiences where you’ll truly feel like you are indeed inside the game.
